Services

Cardiac Imaging Department (Cardiac CT and Cardiac MRI)

The Cardiac Imaging Department of Mediterranean Hospital of Cyprus provides comprehensive cardiac imaging services on a daily basis, including weekends, with 24-hour emergency availability through the Accident & Emergency Department (A&E).

On an emergency basis, cardiac CT imaging is performed for the rapid assessment and exclusion of life-threatening cardiovascular conditions, including:

Acute myocardial infarction
Acute aortic dissection
Acute pulmonary embolism

The Radiology Department performs the full range of Cardiac CT examinations, including:

  • CT Coronary Angiography
  • CT Angiography of the cardiovascular system
  • Advanced CT imaging for pre-procedural planning before transcatheter valve interventions, including TAVI and
  • tricuspid valve procedures

The department also performs Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Cardiac MRI) for the full spectrum of cardiovascular diseases, using specialised imaging protocols tailored to each clinical indication.

Available Cardiac MRI services include:

  • Comprehensive structural and functional cardiac assessment
  • Tissue characterisation for conditions such as cardiomyopathies and myocarditis
  • Stress Cardiac MRI (Stress CMR) using pharmacological stress agents, including regadenoson and adenosine

With the support of specialised paediatricians and paediatric anaesthesiologists, the department also provides Cardiac CT and Cardiac MRI examinations for infants and children when clinically indicated.

All cardiac imaging studies are reviewed, analysed, and reported by a specialised cardiologist with Level 3 certification in advanced cardiac imaging, ensuring high-quality interpretation and accurate clinical guidance.

Electrophysiology - Arrhythmia Department

All Electrophysiological studies are performed in a state-of-the-art Hybrid Operating Theatre, including electrophysiological studies, RF ablation of premature beats or tachycardias, RF ablation or Cryoablation for atrial fibrillation, and implantation of all types of cardiac implantable devices, such as dual-chamber and biventricular pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, and implantable cardiac monitoring devices.

Interventional – Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory

With two modern and fully equipped cardiac catheterisation laboratories, one of which also functions as a hybrid operating theatre, the interventional team performs daily diagnostic cardiac catheterisations, coronary angioplasties with stent implantation, having the capability and availability of all diagnostic and therapeutic techniques (rotablation, shockwave, IVUS, iFR/FFR, etc.), as well as angioplasties of chronic total occlusions of coronary arteries (CTOs).

Furthermore, all transcatheter interventions for structural heart diseases are performed by specialised and certified medical personnel (mitral and tricuspid valve TEER, aortic valve replacement-TAVI, left atrial appendage occlusion-LAAO, closure of patent foramen ovale or atrial septal defect-PFO/ASD, septal alcohol ablation for the treatment of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, as well as paediatric interventional procedures such as percutaneous closure of patent ductus arteriosus, etc.).

The interventional laboratory operates on a 24-hour basis with an on-call interventional cardiologist, and primary coronary angioplasty is provided to patients presenting through the Accident & Emergency Department with acute myocardial infarction.

Cardiology Unit

Patients admitted by the Cardiology Team remain under 24-hour monitoring of heart rhythm, blood pressure, and oxygen levels in the Cardiology Ward, with modern equipment, experienced nursing staff, and the presence of an on-call Clinical Cardiologist on a 24-hour basis.

This includes patients admitted either through the Accident & Emergency Department or through scheduled admissions for appropriate treatment (scheduled electrical cardioversion of arrhythmias, administration of intravenous medications, decompensation of chronic heart disease, or scheduled patients who are to undergo an interventional procedure).

Non-Invasive Programme (TOE, Stress Echo-DSE)

Daily, from 9:00 in the morning until 3:00 in the afternoon, in a fully equipped area within the Hospital, specialised echocardiographic studies using advanced techniques are performed, such as contrast-enhanced transthoracic echocardiography, transoesophageal echocardiography with 4D imaging and analysis, stress echocardiography, and coronary flow reserve echocardiography.

Preventive Cardiology and Outpatient Clinics

Daily, from 8:30 in the morning until 7:00 in the evening, 4 outpatient clinics operate (preventive and clinical cardiology, arrhythmia clinic, structural heart disease clinic, interventional cardiology clinic, and implantable device clinic).

All cardiac examinations are performed, including Electrocardiogram, Transthoracic Echocardiography, 24–48-hour rhythm monitoring (Holter rhythm) and blood pressure monitoring (Holter BP), exercise stress testing with a treadmill, as well as monitoring and adjustment of all available implantable devices (pacemakers, defibrillators, ILRs).
