Adenotomy (Tonsil Removal)

Adenoid hypertrophy, commonly known as “adenoids” or “kreatakia,” is located in the nasopharynx, right behind the nose. It is believed that up to the age of 5-6 years, they play a role in the body’s defense, but they tend to shrink and gradually disappear by adulthood. However, in some cases, their size becomes larger than normal, causing the nasopharynx to become “crowded” by the adenoids, leading to a range of negative effects:

  • A child with hypertrophic adenoids cannot breathe through their nose and resorts to mouth breathing, which over time can lead to malformation of the jaw and skull bones, resulting in what is known as the “adenoid face.”
  • During sleep, the child snores and experiences apneas, meaning their breathing stops for several seconds. This poor quality of sleep leads to fatigue, drowsiness, or hyperactivity during the day, attention deficits, and poor school performance, even learning difficulties. Severe apnea, if not diagnosed and treated promptly, may lead to serious cardiopulmonary issues over time.
  • The child may experience hearing loss and frequent ear infections due to fluid accumulation behind the eardrum.
  • In some cases, the adenoids serve as a “reservoir” of bacteria, predisposing the child to frequent recurrent infections with purulent nasal discharge and cough, which are resistant to antibiotic treatment.

In all of the above cases, the surgical procedure of adenotomy (removal of the adenoids) permanently resolves the problem and ensures the child a normal daily life and proper development.
