The Paediatric Department of Mediterranean Hospital of Cyprus is a modern and comprehensive paediatric care unit, providing high-quality services for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and hospitalisation of infants, children, and adolescents.

The Department covers the full spectrum of modern Paediatrics, managing:

  • Acute and chronic paediatric conditions
  • Infections and febrile illnesses
  • Respiratory and gastrointestinal conditions
  • Paediatric emergencies
  • Neonatal and developmental disorders
  • Haematological and oncological diseases of childhood
  • Complex cases requiring specialised and multidisciplinary paediatric care

The Paediatric Department operates organised Outpatient Clinics, providing:

  • Preventive paediatric follow-up
  • Paediatric assessment and diagnosis
  • Vaccinations
  • Monitoring of children’s growth and development
  • An individualised therapeutic approach for each paediatric patient

The Department has a key role in emergency paediatric care, with a Paediatrician on duty within the Hospital 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing coverage for the Accident & Emergency Department (A&E) and ensuring the prompt assessment and management of paediatric emergencies.

At the same time, an on-call Paediatrician is always available, further strengthening the Hospital’s continuous operational readiness and its ability to manage paediatric emergencies on a 24/7/365 basis.

The Paediatric Department is also supported by:

  • Paediatric Surgeons
  • Paediatric Haematologist-Oncologist
  • Paediatric Radiologist
  • All other specialised services of the Hospital

This ensures comprehensive and specialised paediatric care, even for complex and high-acuity cases.

The Department operates in close collaboration with:

  • The Accident & Emergency Department (A&E)
  • The Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
  • The Clinical Laboratory
  • The Diagnostic Imaging Department
  • The Surgical Departments
  • All paediatric and support services of the Hospital

The Paediatric Department of Mediterranean Hospital of Cyprus has modern paediatric facilities and advanced medical equipment, specifically adapted to the needs of infants, children, and adolescents.

The Department’s specialised nursing staff has experience in the care of infants and children, the management of paediatric emergencies, and the nursing support of paediatric and oncology patients.

Services

Paediatric Developmental Assessment

Developmental assessment is carried out at all stages of childhood, along with screening for autism spectrum disorders. Referrals are also made, when necessary, to other paediatric subspecialties, such as Child Psychiatry and Paediatric Neurology, as well as to other healthcare professionals, including Speech and Language Therapists, Clinical Psychologists, and Occupational Therapists.

Paediatric Endocrinology

Paediatric cases are managed across the full spectrum of Paediatric Endocrinology, including:

  1. Short stature – Growth hormone deficiency – Assessment and prediction of final adult height
  2. Precocious puberty
  3. Delayed puberty – Primary amenorrhoea
  4. Adolescent obesity – Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) – Metabolic syndrome in adolescents
  5. Diabetes mellitus
  6. Pituitary insufficiency
Paediatric Examinations Under Anaesthesia

In collaboration with Paediatric Anaesthesiologists, we provide sedation or general anaesthesia for young patients in order to perform high-quality MRI and CT scans in newborns, infants, and children of all ages. Our primary concern is to ensure that the procedure is safe and comfortable for the child.

Collaboration with Other Paediatric Specialties

The Paediatricians of the Department support the work of other departments caring for young patients. We therefore collaborate with colleagues from specialties such as Paediatric Surgery, Paediatric Orthopaedics, and others.

Dynamic Endocrine Tests

At the Paediatric Department, dynamic endocrine tests are performed in children upon request by a Specialist Paediatrician–Endocrinologist:

  1. Oral glucose tolerance test (glucose tolerance curve)
  2. ACTH–Synacthen test
  3. Growth hormone stimulation tests using glucagon, clonidine, or insulin
  4. Gonadorelin stimulation test
Paediatric Assessment

Following an assessment and in consultation with the Personal Paediatrician, the Specialist Paediatricians of the Department are able to:

  • Refer the child to other Paediatric subspecialties
  • Refer the child to other healthcare professionals (e.g. Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Clinical Psychologists)
  • Request more specialised laboratory and diagnostic imaging tests, depending on the individual case
Paediatric Department

The Paediatric Department admits patients who are referred from the Paediatric Emergency Department or by their Personal Paediatricians for hospitalisation. Paediatric surgical cases are also admitted. It operates as a separate department on the 3rd floor of the Hospital and has a total of 17 beds. The Department’s nursing staff includes nurses specialised in Paediatrics and experienced in paediatric care. The Department is covered by the Paediatrician on duty, who is present 24 hours a day.

Paediatric Emergency Department

The Paediatric Emergency Department operates in a separate area within the Accident & Emergency Department of Mediterranean Hospital of Cyprus. The Paediatric Emergency Department operates continuously and is covered 24 hours a day by the Specialist Paediatrician on duty. All paediatric emergency cases are assessed and treated.
