The Trauma Center of the Mediterranean Hospital of Cyprus began operating in 2015 and may be the first organized Trauma Center in Cyprus. It operates under the scientific leadership of Dr. Andreas Panagiotou, a specialized Surgeon and Traumatologist trained in the German medical school, who designed, equipped, and organized the Trauma Center of the Mediterranean Hospital of Cyprus in accordance with international standards of infrastructure and operation. The Trauma Center is covered on a daily 24/7 basis by the Hospital’s on-duty Trauma Team, a multidisciplinary team consisting of specialist physicians and specially trained nurses with the expertise to provide immediate care to patients, even those with the highest-risk injuries, around the clock. The organization and effectiveness of the Trauma Center of the Mediterranean Hospital of Cyprus were officially recognized in a report prepared by the Cyprus Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Health Insurance Organization in December 2023, in which the Trauma Center was designated as a Level I Trauma Center. The Trauma Team of the Mediterranean Hospital of Cyprus is always led by the Trauma Leader, who is a General Surgeon and bears overall responsibility for the management of each case. The hospital has an advanced trauma team activation system, ensuring that team members are notified in a timely manner via modern technological systems and are coordinated before the patient arrives at the hospital. This is a structured and well-organized team based on international standards, consisting of a General Surgeon, Anesthesiologist, Orthopedic Surgeon, Intensivist, and Radiologist, supported by Interventional Radiologists, Thoracic Surgeons, Neurosurgeons, and Vascular Surgeons of the hospital, always working in collaboration with experienced, trained, and specially selected nursing staff. Together, they provide immediate and targeted management of polytrauma patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our modern Trauma Center features a fully equipped Trauma Room, specially designed and fitted with a multislice CT scanner, digital radiography system, ultrasound machine, ECMO machine, and access to REBOA. The Trauma Room was designed to eliminate unnecessary patient transfers and minimize delays in imaging to the greatest extent possible. It should also be noted that the Trauma Room is directly connected to the Trauma Operating Theatre, where a fully equipped operating room is available exclusively for the management of polytrauma cases.
