Perthes disease is the avascular necrosis of the femoral head in children of unknown origin. There is a risk of significant and permanent deformation of the femoral head, leading to long-term problems, with the risk increasing in older children (over 6 years of age). We offer preventive surgical treatment to patients over 6 years old in the early stages of the disease. Surgical intervention is also recommended for children with hip subluxation and after unwanted complications of the disease, such as leg length discrepancy and hip impingement.
Preventive surgical treatment is performed either with a valgus osteotomy or with arthrodiastasis using external fixation. Arthrodiastasis is an innovative technique aimed at preserving the sphericity of the femoral head and the anatomy of the hip joint, reducing the frequency of pain and osteoarthritis later in life.
