Laparoscopic surgery, which is one of the most significant advancements in General Surgery during the 20th century, is a minimally invasive surgical technique and an alternative way to perform many surgical procedures.
Laparoscopy refers to the visualization (inspection) of abdominal organs through a small incision of a few millimeters, through which a special optical tool, the laparoscope, is inserted. The laparoscope is a camera that allows the image of the inside of the abdomen to be displayed on a screen with magnification. After assessing the patient’s condition, special instruments are then inserted through other small incisions (5-10 millimeters), which allow the surgeon to perform the surgery without the need for a larger incision.
Advantages of laparoscopic surgery: Almost all surgical procedures can now be successfully and safely performed laparoscopically. Many of these are now proven to be better done laparoscopically due to the advantages associated with this minimally invasive method.
Some of the advantages of laparoscopic surgery include:
- Less postoperative pain and more comfort for the patient
- Faster recovery and return to work
- Shorter hospitalization
- Rapid mobilization of the patient
- Lower rates of postoperative wound infection
- Lower rates of postoperative hernia formation
- Lower risk of adhesions (which can lead to future intestinal obstruction)
- Minimal disturbance of the digestive system’s function postoperatively – early return to normal bowel movements
- Less postoperative stress on the body
- Better aesthetic outcomes, smaller incisions
- For the surgeon: high-resolution image, magnification capability, better performance
The surgeon must be knowledgeable about laparoscopic technology not only from a surgical standpoint but also regarding the machinery used.
The surgeon should have a thorough understanding of the instruments they use and be able to recognize and address any malfunctions.
The surgeon must be familiar with laparoscopic techniques, have received training, and have performed a number of surgeries.
The Surgical Clinic of Mediterranean Hospital of Cyprus has specially trained and experienced surgeons.
