Intracoronary ultrasound, or IVUS for short, is a modern and very useful diagnostic tool in the hands of the interventional cardiologist. It is a small catheter that at its tip has an ultrasound probe, which allows us to visualize the anatomical features of the coronary arteries in cross-section (size, calcium, extent, and texture of the atherosclerotic plaque). Additionally, with the help of IVUS, it is possible to assess the outcome of an angioplasty and optimize the final result. Numerous studies confirm that the use of IVUS is associated with better long-term outcomes.
