Endoscopic Nasal and Paranasal Sinus Surgery

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Using specialized endoscopes and without any external incisions, the openings of the sinuses are accessed with special instruments, and polyps and mucopurulent secretions are removed from within them. The extent of the surgery, meaning how many and which paranasal sinuses will be opened, depends on the severity of the problem. The average surgical time is 1 to 2 hours. In cases that require greater precision, such as reoperations, a special navigator (Navigator) is used. This method effectively addresses inflammation and restores normal air and mucus circulation within the sinuses.

During the procedure, the surgeon inserts a special thin endoscope into the nasal cavity and monitors the process on a screen with magnified images. Using specialized surgical instruments, nasal polyps are removed, and the openings of the sinuses are widened internally, thus reducing the chances of symptom recurrence. The entire process leaves no scarring, is painless, and the patient can return home the same day if desired. After the surgery, the doctor will recommend the use of a nasal spray and rinses with saline or a special solution for an extended period. Compliance with post-operative instructions is crucial.

The use of endoscopes combined with specialized tools in endoscopic surgery offers excellent capabilities today. This is because they provide highly magnified and detailed images of the nose and sinuses, allowing us to operate in anatomical areas that were previously inaccessible with traditional methods. Thus, Endoscopic Surgery is an excellent choice for treating a range of pathological conditions beyond chronic rhinosinusitis. These include primarily nasal tumors, both benign (such as inverted papilloma, osteoma, cholesterol granuloma, and juvenile angiofibroma) and malignant (such as squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and neuroblastoma). Additionally, endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy is highly effective for treating obstructions of the lacrimal system, and endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery is used for the removal of pituitary tumors.
