Education – Academic Background
Dr. Michalis Demosthenous was born in Nicosia, Cyprus, in 1981. Following completion of his military service, he studied at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, graduating in 2008. From 2008, he served as a scientific associate at the First Department of Cardiology of the University of Athens. In 2015, he was awarded his PhD, with a doctoral thesis entitled “The Effects of Adipokines and Oxidative Stress on the Development of Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation in Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting.” He completed his training in General Surgery at the Hellenic Red Cross Hospital from 2011 to 2014 and subsequently specialised in Cardiac Surgery at Hippokration General Hospital of Athens, obtaining his specialist qualification in 2018. He further advanced his training through clinical fellowships at internationally recognised centres, including John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, Royal Brompton Hospital in London, and St Michael’s Hospital at the University of Toronto, with a focus on Adult Cardiac Surgery.

Research and Scientific Work
Dr. Michalis Demosthenous has an extensive academic and research background, with his scientific publications receiving more than 1,500 citations. He has presented over 100 scientific contributions at international conferences, reflecting his active involvement in the international cardiac surgical community. He serves as an editor for the International Journal of Surgery and Research and as a reviewer for several scientific journals, including the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Journal of the American Heart Association, Journal of Cardiac Surgery, and Innovations and Techniques in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery. In 2023, he was awarded the distinction of Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
Current Position
Since June 2020, Dr. Michalis Demosthenous has been working as an Exclusive Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at the Mediterranean Hospital of Cyprus, performing a broad spectrum of contemporary cardiac surgical procedures. His clinical practice incorporates advanced minimally invasive and fully endoscopic cardiac surgical techniques, with particular emphasis on valve repair, coronary revascularisation, and complex aortic surgery, while maintaining a strong focus on patient safety, individualised treatment, and high-quality surgical care.
