Dr Karpouzis Ioannis

Ioannis Karpouzis MD, MSc, is a highly accomplished Cardiologist, specializing in advanced transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography. He earned his Medicine MBBS from the University of Athens in 2012 with Honors (8.7/10) and recently completed an MSc in Bioinformatics and Biomedical Data Science with a near-perfect distinction of 9.8/10. His clinical expertise is validated by his 2023 attainment of the Title of Medical Specialty in Cardiology and his success in the European Examination in Core Cardiology, where he ranked 3rd among all Greek applicants. Throughout his career, Dr. Karpouzis has cultivated a robust international clinical profile, having served as a Junior Clinical Fellow in Critical Care at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and in Cardiology at Glenfield Hospital within the English NHS. His foundational training includes extensive service within the Greek National Health System and a specialized role as a Military Medical Advisor for the Greek National Support Element in Naples, Italy.
His technical proficiency spans the full spectrum of general cardiology, including left and right heart catheterization, pacemaker interrogation, and emergency critical care. He holds advanced certifications in Advanced Life Support (ERC), Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) from Barts Health, and Advanced FICE from the British Intensive Care Society. Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Karpouzis is a distinguished researcher and leader; he conducted a high-impact Quality Improvement Project on Atrial Fibrillation practice, which was subsequently published in the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anaesthesia. His academic excellence has been recognized with a prestigious HELIDEK grant totaling €396,000 for his work on the ALBION study, where he utilized machine learning and signal processing to predict early-stage dementia. This research has led to an offer for a funded PhD position, reflecting his commitment to translational medicine. Fluent in both Greek and English, he consistently integrates data science—including proficiency in Python, R, and Matlab—into his medical practice to drive innovation and provide evidence-based, high-quality patient care while actively mentoring the next generation of medical professionals through clinical teaching and leadership.
