In the past, the treatment of structural diseases such as atrial septal defects (ASD) and patent foramen ovale (PFO) required open-heart surgery. Now, all these procedures can be performed using catheterization through the leg. With local anesthesia and sedation, and guided by three-dimensional ultrasound, these conditions can be easily treated by placing a device called an “umbrella” at the specific site of the “hole” in the heart. This is a relatively simple procedure lasting 30 minutes to an hour, and the patient can leave the hospital the next day. In the case of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, where there is thickening of the heart walls leading to narrowing of the outflow tract, the focused use of alcohol to “burn” the thickened parts of the heart wall is the only “non-surgical method” for reducing the thickening of the heart walls and normalizing blood flow from the heart to the body.
