Education – Academic Background
Dr. Ioannis Anastasiou graduated from the School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 2004. He subsequently completed his doctoral thesis at the same institution, focusing on predictive factors for the recurrence of oesophageal varices in patients with liver cirrhosis, and was awarded his PhD with Distinction in 2008. During his academic training, he served as an Honorary Research Fellow at the Institute of Hepatology, University College London, under the supervision of Professor Roger Williams. He completed his specialist training in Internal Medicine at Evangelismos Hospital in Athens, followed by specialist training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the same hospital. From 2015 to 2016, he undertook an Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, in the United States.

Scientific and Research Work
Dr. Ioannis Anastasiou has an extensive academic and research background at an international level. He has published more than 35 scientific papers in recognised international medical journals, with research interests encompassing Gastroenterology, Hepatology, advanced endoscopy, artificial intelligence in medicine, and gastrointestinal cancer. He has served as an invited reviewer for international scientific journals and actively participates in multicentre research studies and international scientific conferences. He also has significant teaching experience, having contributed to the education and training of medical students, residents and fellows at academic institutions in the United States, Saudi Arabia and Europe.
Current Position
Since September 2025, Dr. Ioannis Anastasiou has been an Exclusive Consultant Physician at the Mediterranean Hospital of Cyprus, providing specialised diagnostic and therapeutic services for gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary diseases. Drawing on extensive international experience in Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Advanced Interventional Endoscopy, he applies modern, minimally invasive endoscopic techniques and provides high-quality, personalised patient care.
