Dr. Pantelis Kountourakis has been the Director of the Oncology Department at Mediterranean Hospital since 01/09/2021. He specializes in the treatment of cancers of the digestive and gynecological systems.
He graduated from the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1998. He trained in Internal Medicine at the B’ Propedeutic and Pathological Clinic of the University of Athens (P.G.N.A. “Evangelismos”, “Attikon”, 2002-2005). He then continued his training in Medical Oncology at Yale University (USA, 2005-2006) and the Anticancer Hospital “Agios Savvas” (2006-2008). In July 2007, he was awarded a PhD with distinction from the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens for his doctoral thesis on the study of HER receptors (EGFR, HER-2, HER-3, HER-4) in colon cancer. In September 2008, after exams, he was awarded the title of Medical Oncologist in Greece and by the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO).
From 2009-2010, he further trained in the Department of Gastrointestinal Oncology at the University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, USA. In 2010, he worked as a scientific collaborator in the Department of Immunology and Cancer Immunotherapy at the Anticancer Hospital “Agios Savvas”.
During his training at Yale University, he participated in major research programs related to molecular epidemiology in ovarian and head and neck cancers, utilizing automated techniques for protein expression analysis (automated quantitative protein analysis, AQUA).
From July 2010 to August 2021, Dr. Kountourakis worked as a Specialist Pathologist Oncologist at the Oncology Center of Bank of Cyprus in Nicosia.
His research and clinical work have been presented at various international European and World congresses, as well as published in reputable international journals. He has participated as a co-investigator in numerous clinical trials of EORTC (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer), academic institutions, and pharmaceutical companies.
He is a member of the scientific societies HESMO, ESMO, and ASCO.
