Dr. Michalis Zenios was born in Limassol in 1971 and graduated from Lanitio Lyceum B’ in 1988 with a grade of 20/20. He studied at the Medical School of the University of Manchester, where he graduated with honors in 1995. He remained in the United Kingdom until 2012. He completed his basic surgical training (MRCS England) and his orthopedic training at the University Hospitals of Manchester. During his specialty training, he obtained a Master in Science (MSc) in Orthopedic Bioengineering from the University of Cardiff. From 2006 to 2007, he completed a clinical and research subspecialty in pediatric orthopedics at the Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney, Australia.
Upon returning to the UK in 2007, he was appointed as the Director of the Pediatric Orthopedic Clinic at the Manchester University Hospital, one of the largest pediatric hospitals in Europe, where he became the head of one of the most active surgical units of the hospital. He performed surgery on many children in the UK with complex fractures, cerebral palsy, and significant deformities. He remained there until 2012 when he returned to Cyprus. He completed his PhD from the University of Manchester.
In January 2022, he was appointed as the Director of the Pediatric Orthopedic Department at Mediterranean Hospital of Cyprus. He exclusively works with children with orthopedic issues, and the department operates in close collaboration with the Orthopedic, Pediatric, Pediatric Anesthesia, and Radiology departments of the hospital. He has treated a significant number of children with severe orthopedic problems due to trauma or congenital, neuromuscular, and developmental pathologies. His main interests in pediatric orthopedics include deformities of the limbs, musculoskeletal infections, deformity correction using circular external fixation (the Taylor Spatial Frame – TSF), prevention and treatment of hip dysplasia, clubfoot, scoliosis, and cerebral palsy. He has served as an Assistant Professor at the Medical School of the University of Cyprus and as President of the Cyprus Orthopedic Society.
Dr. Zenios has published numerous articles in internationally renowned journals, both in pediatric orthopedics and general orthopedics, and maintains his academic interest. The department is currently conducting a research study exploring the relationship between modern lifestyle and musculoskeletal problems in adolescents. The research has been approved by the Ministry of Education and the Bioethics Committee of Cyprus.
