Biography

Dr. Athanasios Petrou is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Medical School of the European University and the Director of the Surgical Clinic and Surgical Oncology Department at the Mediterranean Hospital of Cyprus.

Dr. Petrou completed his surgical training at the First Surgical Clinic of the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, at Laiko General Hospital, in 2009. In 2009, he earned his Master’s degree in Hepatobiliary Surgery – Bile Ducts – Pancreatic Surgery from the Medical School of the Democritus University of Thrace, and in 2010 he was awarded a Doctorate from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

During his advanced surgical education at the First Surgical Clinic of the University of Athens and at Hammersmith Hospital/Imperial College, London, NHS Trust, Department of HPB Surgery, he extensively focused on Hepatobiliary – Bile Ducts – Pancreatic Surgery and Surgical Oncology.

His specialization in Hepatobiliary – Pancreatic Surgery as well as Surgical Oncology was completed during his post-graduate training as a specialized surgeon between 2009 and 2012 at The Royal Marsden Hospital, Imperial College, London, NHS Trust – Department of Academic Surgery, and at Oxford University, Churchill Hospital, Oxford, NHS Trust – HPB/UGI & Transplant Center.

His post-graduate training and certification in Minimally Invasive (Laparoscopic & Robotic) Surgery were carried out at leading European reference centers such as Milan, Ghent, Strasbourg, and Southampton.

His post-graduate training and specialization include the treatment of malignancies of the upper digestive tract (esophageal cancer, stomach cancer, etc.), as well as the surgery of sarcomas, retroperitoneal tumors, and adrenal tumors.

He is also specialized in the treatment of peritoneal malignancy/carcinomatosis (metastatic disease of the peritoneal cavity, pseudomyxoma peritonei, peritoneal epithelial tumors, etc.) with cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC, as well as extensive lymph node dissections.

Simultaneously, Minimally Invasive Surgery (Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery) for benign conditions of the esophagus and stomach (hiatal hernia, achalasia, etc.) is also part of his expertise.

As a surgeon with specialization in areas of Surgical Oncology and Minimally Invasive Surgery, with a long scientific and academic career, he has been a founding member and director at major centers with clinical and scientific backgrounds.

Since January 2022, he has been a founding member and one of the Directors of the 4th Surgical Clinic and the Department of Surgery, Hepatobiliary – Pancreatic – Bile Duct Surgery at IASO Private Clinic, Athens. From 2014 to 2020, Dr. Petrou was one of the pioneers and leaders in Robotic Surgery for the liver and pancreas at the European level, having the Direction and Scientific Supervision of the HPB & Surgical Oncology Centre at the internationally renowned Center of Excellence for Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery – AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINIMALLY INVASIVE ROBOTIC SURGERY.

Additionally, until 2018 and for seven years, he held the position of Head Specialist Surgeon in Hepatobiliary – Pancreatic – Bile Duct Surgery and Surgical Oncology at the Surgical Clinic of the General Hospital of Nicosia.

Since 2016, Dr. Petrou has been one of the pioneers in introducing and applying the therapeutic protocol Nanoknife (Irreversible Electroporation – IRE) and ECT (Electrochemotherapy) in Greece and Cyprus.

From 2013 to 2016, he was an elected member of the academic community at the Medical School of St George’s University of London / University of Nicosia Medical School, holding the position of Honorary Assistant Professor in Surgery. Between 2018 and 2021, he served as a member of the Educational Committee of the European Association for Hepatobiliary Surgery – Pancreatic Surgery – (E-AHPBA).

Dr. Petrou is an elected member of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Society of Hepatobiliary Surgery – Pancreatic Surgery and a member of the Upper Digestive Surgeons Association of Great Britain and Ireland.

He is also a member of the European and World Association for Hepatobiliary Pancreatic and Bile Duct Surgery (E-AHPBA, I-HPBA), the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO).

His academic background is exceptional with more than 100 published articles, abstracts, clinical and experimental studies in reputable international scientific journals, while dozens of studies have been presented at international surgical meetings and conferences.

Since November 2020, Dr. Petrou, as a partner of the Mediterranean Hospital of Cyprus, holding the position of Director of the Surgical Clinic and Surgical Oncology, has contributed to the creation of the largest Surgical Clinic in the private sector in Cyprus, which includes a team of 15 surgeons covering all their specialized areas.

Throughout his career, he has distinguished himself both for his scientific and humanitarian work, having performed surgeries on a large number of international patients.
